Below is the response from Jessica Toale (Labour) - Bournemouth West, Tom Hayes (Labour) - Bournemouth East and Joanna Howard (Labour) - Christchurchand East Dorset .

Dear Women of Dorset,

Thank you for your email and questions.

As candidates we are proud of the Labour Party’s record of progress on equality, from the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act in 1975 to the Equality Act in 2010.

The next Labour government will build on the progress that has been made in the past by addressing today’s challenges, making hatred against women a hate crime, acting on the gender pay gap and maternity discrimination, and modernising the law on gender recognition whilst protecting spaces for biological women.

One of our missions for the country at this election is to break down barriers to opportunity for all, ensuring that everyone is treated with respect and dignity.  

Our manifesto has set out our plans to:

  • Modernise the Gender Recognition Act so that it removes indignities for trans people, whilst retaining the need for a diagnosis of gender dysphoria from a specialist doctor, enabling access to the healthcare pathway.
  • Support the Equality Act and the protections it affords women, including its provision for single-sex spaces.
  • Deliver a full trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices, while protecting the freedom for people to explore their sexuality and gender identity.
  • Work to implement the expert recommendation of the Cass Review to ensure that young people presenting to the NHS with gender dysphoria are receiving appropriate and high-quality care. Labour will always put our children first and our most important focus has been and will always be children’s wellbeing.

We are a tolerant country, with a proud record of progress on equality. We need to work through these issues with respect and sensitivity rather than pitting people against each other. Our experience shows that greater progress and equality comes from bringing people together and treating each other with respect.

Charity Commission Response to a Complaint Raised Against Space Youth Project, Dorset - May 2024

On 18th May, 2024 Space Youth Project, funded by both Dorset Council and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council publicised on Instagram and Facebook that a demonstration would be held the following day, against the Cass Review.     Women of Dorset were so concerned that a publicly funded organisation had published and encourged  vulnerable children, young people, parents and carers to protest against the recommendations of the Cass Review that they contacted the Charity Commission with their concerns.   Women of Dorset believed that Space Youth Project was not acting in accordance with the updated NHS Guidelines, in relation to issues of gender identity and gender dysphoria. Below is the response from Michael Tomlinson (Conservative) - Mid Dorset and North Poole. Dear Women of Dorset,   Thank you for your email and your questions. I hope that the following answers them all for you:   A woman is an adult human female. You cannot “become a woman”. You are born female, with XX chromosomes and grow up to be a woman.   I welcome the recent announcement by the Prime Minister that the Conservative Party will introduce primary legislation to clarify that the protected characteristic of sex in the Equality Act means biological sex, in addition to legislating that a person can only have one sex in the eyes of the law in the United Kingdom.
