Education in Dorset

This post is a summary of LGBT education in Dorset delivered by Space Youth Project and their education officer Diversity Mel.

Space Youth Project are a local charity supporting Young People who are LGBTQ+ in Dorset. https://www.spaceyouthproject.co.uk/ 

They are based at Bournemouth and Poole College and are funded by BCP council, Dorset Council and a range of other charitable funders including the National Lottery. 


Mel is the volunteer Education Volunteer https://www.spaceyouthproject.co.uk/education-training



Mel also has a separate website with recommended resources for use with children in schools from age 3. https://www.diversitymel.com/

Recommended teaching resources for primary ages from Space youth include the following books:


The page titled Guidance and Advice for Schools has a range of downloadable information sheets

Advice on Supporting a Child to Socially Transition in School has a list of do's and don'ts including:


A getting to know you form is recommended to help keep the transitioning of children secret. 

Advice for Biology lessons includes removing references to females and mothers 
A recommended guide for children on residential suggests children can be segregated by age rather than sex.
